Fit Guide

A respirator only protects you if it seals to your face. A mask that fits well filters the air you breathe. A mask that leaks lets contaminated air slip in around the edge, no matter how good the filter is. This takes two minutes and you should do it every time you put the mask on.

Before you fit: the seal needs bare skin

The mask seals against your skin, not against hair. Stubble, a beard, or long sideburns along the sealing line will break the seal and let air leak in. For full protection, be clean-shaven where the mask meets your face. If you cannot be clean-shaven, the mask cannot be relied on to seal.

Tie back long hair and remove anything that crosses the seal, such as glasses arms or a hood edge, before you fit.

Putting it on

Loosen all the straps first. Pull the mask over your face so your chin sits in the bottom of the facepiece and the seal rests evenly around your nose and mouth. Draw the harness over the back of your head, not the crown.

Adjusting the harness

Tighten the straps in pairs, bottom first, then the top, pulling each side evenly so the mask sits straight and centred. Snug, not crushing. A mask cranked too tight distorts the seal and gets uncomfortable fast, which is what makes people loosen it mid-job and lose protection. You want firm, even contact all the way around.

The seal check (do this every time)

Positive check, for outward leaks: cover the exhalation valve with your palm and breathe out gently. The facepiece should bulge slightly and hold. If air escapes around the edge, reseat the mask and adjust.

Negative check, for inward leaks: cover the filter inlets with your palms and breathe in gently. The facepiece should pull in slightly toward your face and stay there while you hold your breath. If it springs back or you feel air drawn in around the edge, the seal is not good.

If it still leaks

Reseat the mask and run both checks again. Common causes are uneven strap tension, a stray strand of hair across the seal, or the mask sitting too high or too low. If you cannot get a clean seal after adjusting, do not enter the hazard area.

Sizing

All Tesoro masks are one size, with a multi-point adjustable harness that fits a wide range of face shapes. The fit you get comes from the seal check and the harness, not from picking a size.
